- "I was here before you, father, and I will be here long after you are gone. You speak of the mother, as if you know her. You are a fool. Just as the mother gave birth to the child, the mother gave birth to me. You speak of her ancestor's father. Who do you think created me?"
- —Candlemaker[src]
Candlemaker is one of Dorothy Spinner's imaginary "friends", who can only get out to the real world when Dorothy makes a wish. He is the main antagonist of season 2. When Dorothy finally emerged from her captivity in Danny the Street, Candlemaker began to manipulate her as she began to grow, forcing her to make wishes in order to free herself, but as Dorothy became a teenager, Candlemaker became more powerful and tried to destroy the world, defeating Niles Caulder's test subjects, until Dorothy stopped him, forcing him to be her friend again.
Biography[]
1920s[]
Massacre in the circus[]
Candlemaker meets Niles at the circus.
In 1927, when Dorothy was held captive as part of a circus, Candlemaker urged her to make a wish after one of her other imaginary friends was punished. She did, resulting in everyone but her & her father’s.[1] death.
2020s[]
Manipulating Dorothy[]
Some years later, in 2020, the Candlemaker appeared after Dorothy was terrified by a mother rat eating its runt baby, seeking to protect her. He urged her to make a wish, but she was calmed down by her father, and all of her imaginary friends disappeared. He later urged her to once again make a wish, claiming that her father was dying, but she reminded him that it was bedtime, and so they all had to sleep.[2] Later, when Dorothy was trapped in the Doom Manor's Furnace by Baby Doll after Dorothy's prank got out of control, Dorothy attempted to conjure Manny to defend herself from the Personality. Threatened by this, Baby Doll calls upon Flaming Katy to kill it.
In anger and hatred for her former friend, Dorothy was easily convinced by Candlemaker to make another wish. She wishes that he kills Baby Doll. Upon Dorothy blowing out the candle and summoning him, Candlemaker proceeds to forcibly enter into The Underground to hunt down Baby Doll - where Lucy Fugue, Hammerhead and Flaming Katy attempted to fight him off, while Crazy Jane attempted to hide Baby Doll in her "Playpen Station" to safety. However despite their attempts, Candlemaker easily repels Lucy's lightning attacks, swats aside and kills Flaming Katy and pushes Hammerhead out of the way before violently shoving his fist into Baby Doll and killing her. Dorothy escaped from Doom Manor and hopped on a rocket of newcomers the Pioneers of the Uncharted. When Dorothy lands on the moon, Candlemaker manipulates her by blaming her for the Underground massacre. Dorothy was surprised that Candlemaker speaks better and Candlemaker tells her that when she grow he will grow too.
Liberation[]
Niles left Dorothy on the rocket to find Slava in Yukon and at night, Candlemaker appeared before Niles and told him everything that happened when he left. He reveals that Slava died and poor Dorothy had to survive alone without a father. Candlemaker would take advantage of that to be able to be free and cause horror in the world. Niles woke up and realised that it was a vision from Candlemaker that he will be free soon.
Niles and Dorothy had a great day at the fair so that Niles would be with her one last day before Willoughby Kipling does whatever he has to do. Candlemaker chased Dorothy to attack her and she ran away with Niles however it was all a vision of Dorothy and Candlemaker preparing for her freedom and for Dorothy to make the last wish.
Slava used a spell for Candlemaker to be released without delay and Candlemaker was released to confront Dorothy and destroy the world. When Niles fell to the ground from coughing, Kipling was about to help lift him up when he felt wax on his coat and Niles and Kipling saw a waxed clown statue and realized that Candlemaker is free.
Dorothy was shocked to hear that because she did not make any wish and Candlemaker told her that it is no longer necessary and it is already time to fulfill their destiny. Candlemaker started waxing everything, celebrating his freedom.
Fight the Dorothy's Friends[]
Kipling tried to stop Candlemaker but Candlemaker defeated him, leaving him badly injured. After Herschel asked the Niles' patients for help, the team teleported to the fair to save Niles and Dorothy, Candlemaker kept trying to get Dorothy to confront him and informed her that her friends have already arrived. Kipling told the team that Candlemaker summoned his imaginary friends to attack them and told them to run away. Candlemaker had summoned Kipling's imaginary friend who was a puppet clown and Kipling was dragged away.
The team parted ways to search faster and as "Miranda" was in trouble in the Underground, Candlemaker waxed her easily. At some point after Kipling got into a fight with his imaginary friend, Candlemaker waxed him and since Larry had no imaginary friends, Candlemaker scared Larry with Kipling using demonic eyes making Larry fall and wax him. Candlemaker summoned Doctor Cowboy ( Vic's Imaginary Friend), Mademoiselle Roxy (Rita's Imaginary Friend) and Jesus Christ (Cliff's Imaginary Friend) and use those 3 imaginary friends to finish them off.
Dorothy kept preventing Candlemaker from being released completely and Candlemaker watched the Doom Patrol fight with their imaginary friends. Candlemaker became angry that they were giving up fighting and got back to their friendship, and Candlemaker communicated through the imaginary friends telling them the worst things to do. The imaginary friends hear this and wax Vic who was trying to run away, and also wax Rita before destroying Cliff's body and waxing him. Dorothy left to go with Niles and fix everything, however she saw Slava and discovered that she released Candlemaker. Slava gave her 2 options; to be a girl always or become a woman. Dorothy decided to fulfill her destiny. Niles was sad that Dorothy faced Candlemaker and worried that she could be the same as the others, however Dorothy created her own weapon and put on the red boots. Niles was present when he saw Dorothy getting ready and Candlemaker was completely freed and took Dorothy to fulfill her destiny.
Reconciliation with Dorothy[]
Candlemaker reflects with Dorothy on the Moon.
After kidnapping Dorothy, Candlemaker transported her to her cage in the Yukon to confront her, attempting to get close to her, so Dorothy shot an arrow to kill him. However, Dorothy transported them both to the Moon again, with the girl demonstrating her power before the furious Candlemaker. Dorothy suggested changing the fate because she didn't want to fight him, reminding Candlemaker that he was her protector and protected Manny. Under the threat that Dorothy would lock them both up forever until they were friends again, Candlemaker was forced to accept and reconcile their friendship.
Candlemaker and Dorothy returned to Earth, with the monster returning Dorothy's friends to normal, allowing them to stop being wax, surprising Rita, Vic, and Larry when they saw Dorothy return on top of the giant Candlemaker. Three weeks later, Candlemaker, inside Dorothy's mind, sought to protect her and attack Daddy, who possessed Jane's body, but Dorothy did not let Candlemaker out so as not to hurt Jane.
Protecting Dorothy[]
While living in Dannyland, Danny's new form of park, Dorothy did not wish to free Candlemaker because he reminded her of her father, as well as not wanting to visit her friends at the manor, now known as the Doom Patrol. Dorothy told false stories to the Dannyzens that she and Candlemaker entered Eismann Gallery to retrieve the longevity talisman, although it was the Dead Boy Detectives who carried out the robbery.
Candlemaker defends Dorothy and her friends from Torminox.
When Torminox and his Vectra attacked Dorothy, Maura Lee Karupt and Casey Brinke, Dorothy finally apologized to Candlemaker and asked for his help in protecting them. Candlemaker followed the order and knocked down several Vectra until trying to attack Torminox, who began to turn him into a cube along with Danny, worrying Dorothy about her friend, but Candlemaker begged him to flee. After acquiring the talisman, Torminox returned Danny and Candlemaker's cubes, allowing Danny to return to his park form and Candlemaker to return to Dorothy's mind.
