"Those annoying, fuckless losers I live with are my family. They may be spineless and stupid as shit... but I know deep down they all care about me."
—Jane confronting her alters[src]

Crazy Jane, or simply Jane, is the primary host of Kay Challis, a young girl who first developed DID (dissociative identity disorder) after being physically, emotionally, and sexually attacked by her father, eventually among others. Just like her predecessor Miranda, Jane's purpose is to maintain equilibrium in the Underground, where Kay's other alters reside. Jane has control over Kay's body most of the time until another alter manifests when they feel they are needed. Upon being saved by Niles, Jane began living in Doom Manor and regarded Niles as a father.

When she returned to the manor, Jane met Cliff Steele, who became her best friend and her surrogate father. After Niles was kidnapped by Mr. Nobody, Jane and Caulder's other patients set out on a journey to find him. Jane began to take her role as the primary alter more seriously and managed to overcome her fear of Daddy. When the team confronted Nobody, Jane and the others discovered that Niles was responsible for everything that happened to them, which caused the team to break up, but they reunited to save the Chief's daughter, Dorothy Spinner.

Jane began to rebel and tried to keep everything under control, even though the others wanted to guide her, until the real Miranda returned from the Well to take Jane's place. Jane began an investigation into the death of many alters until she discovered that Miranda was actually Daddy in disguise. Together with her alters and Kay, Jane was able to temporarily defeat Daddy.

Returning to the team, Jane and her friends tried to get over Niles' death on vacation, though they died, and she learned more about Kay. Jane came into conflict with the Doctor Harrison, as she wanted Kay out, causing a big problem in the Underground, while helping Laura De Mille face the Sisterhood of Dada, where she met Shelley Byron. After the Eternal Flagellation, Jane noticed the alters left, abandoning her position as hostess to save Kay, and joined her friends, forming the new Doom Patrol.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Jane became the primary alter after Miranda, Kay Challis's former primary alter, destroyed herself at the Well in the Underground due to following advice from the Sisters as a result of being coerced into sex. When Jane surfaced, she punched Miranda's boyfriend, Johnny, and told everyone present that she didn't know who was worse - the men, for taking advantage of the women, or the women, for letting the men take advantage of them. Jane promptly left, and insisted on being called Jane when Johnny called after Miranda.[1]

Jane is experimented on

Jane is experimented on in the sanatorium, which gave each of her alters their powers and birthed Katy.

Jane regularly lived in a sanatorium and would often sneak to go outside. In 1976, she was experimented on and her alters were given the powers they now possess. Alters such as Katy and Hammerhead would try to assist her but at the expense of Jane getting accused and punished for it. In the year 1977, Jane was at a punk rock concert in New Jersey when she was assaulted by two men in a mosh pit. However, she fought them off but was soon apprehended by police officers and dragged back to the sanatorium where she sustained further abuse from her keepers such as Doctor Bertrand. As a result of sustaining such abuse from her keepers Dr. Harrison awoken.[2]

In the year 1978, she eventually met a scientist named Niles Caulder who rescued her body and took her into Doom Manor.[2] He conducted numerous interviews and documentations with her to understand her disorder. She enlightened him on the Underground, following the discussion of a hostile alter named Katy.[3]

Return to Doom Manor[]

Cliff talks to Jane as she paints

Jane and Cliff Steele meeting for the first time

In 2019, Jane revisited Doom Manor and obnoxiously made a scene as Sylvia and Hammerhead emerged. Later, Jane was personally introduced to Cliff Steele while painting outside. Jane mentioned that Hammerhead had told her about her altercation with Cliff. Cliff, however, apologized to Jane, explaining that he had been a "little on edge" with the approach of his deceased daughter's upcoming birthday. Jane spent the rest of the day painting, until the Hangman's Daughter took over and conversed with Cliff in the rain.[4]

When Niles left to go on another one of his travels, Jane suggested that Cliff, Larry, and Rita sneak out into town. After some convincing, they all agreed. Once there, Jane accompanied Cliff and walked with him to a toy store, to get a gift in memory of his daughter. They both sat on a bench afterward where Cliff shared some of his past with Jane. She eventually lit a cigarette and blew smoke in his face to see if any of his senses would react, to no avail. Jane eventually brought up that Cliff's daughter was still alive, but he refused to believe it, causing Hammerhead to surface and attempt to start an altercation with some police officers. Jane returned, however, when they noticed that Rita had lost control of herself, rampaging and causing massive destruction to the town. Jane and Cliff ran after her to stop her. Through Jane's failed attempts to get through to Rita, Hammerhead took over yet again.

Rita, Larry, Cliff, and Jane in Cloverton

Jane stands alongside Rita, Larry, Cliff as the town falls apart.

When they all returned back to Doom Manor, Niles did as well. He scolded all of them and warned them of incoming danger. The majority, including Jane, voted that it would be best to move someplace safer. As Cliff stayed behind to help Cloverton, Jane voiced wanting to help him. Everyone, but Niles, sided with her and she eagerly turned back around. They met with Cliff in the streets of Cloverton and encountered an albino donkey. A sinkhole suddenly formed in the road,[4] and began to swallow everything within its perimeter including the group's bus, which Niles was aboard. The sinkhole began to attract the bus and although Jane tried to stop it, it was successfully swallowed. Denying Cliff's pleas, Jane jumped into the sinkhole after Niles.[3]

Looking for the Chief[]

The donkey spits out Jane

While trying to understand what is going on, Jane is suddenly spat up in front of Cliff and Victor.

Jane was eventually spat up by the very donkey they encountered in Cloverton. When she was brought back to Doom Manor, she had a mental breakdown amidst questioning and multiple alters such as Sylvia, Hammerhead, Penny Farthing, Scarlet Harlot andSpinning Jenny surfaced. When Jane briefly returned, she was curious as to why Victor Stone and Cliff were staring at her. As Victor approached her, Baby Doll emerged and spoke with Victor. After Katy, Lucy Fugue, Hammerhead, and Silver Tongue surfaced to defend themselves in an escalated situation, Jane returned and found herself locked in her bedroom starting to rapid-switch. Cliff spoke to her on the other side of the door and sympathized with whatever ordeal she sustained to become how she is. Jane forgave Cliff they both went outside just as Rita, Larry, and Victor managed to destroy the donkey and return Cloverton to its previous condition. Once that was over, everyone returned to their rooms, but the Hangman's Daughter took over and painted a picture of what appeared to be everyone, including Jane, dead around Cyborg as he held his father, Silas Stone, in his arms.[3]

While strolling through the neighborhood, Jane was putting up missing posters of Niles. An angry mob followed her and when one of them got aggressive with her, Hammerhead injured him. When Jane returned to the manor, everyone was gathered and briefed on Mr. Nobody and his connection to Paraguay, which was where they agreed to go to learn what happened to Niles. During their drive to Paraguay, the bus broke down and they stopped at a Motel. Jane was asked, by Larry, for advice on how she kept her "people" in line. She harshly clarified that they were not hers to control and that she respected them. She suggested that Larry do the same with his Negative Spirit.

The following day, Jane returned to the motel with coffee and donuts, however, she became irritated when she learned that Rita locked herself in the bathroom. While the rest of the party disputed whether they leave Rita behind, Flit surfaced and instantly teleported to Paraguay with Cliff and Larry. While there, Jane was then greeted by a stranger named Steve Larson, who was waiting for a bus and told them about the Morden procedure. The bus finally arrived and transported them to Fuchtopia, a Nazi facility that created metahumans. Jane and the rest were taken to watch a lengthy puppet show. During the show, a puppet that strikingly resembled Niles was shown to have been involved in Fuchtopia's past. Jane followed up with the Morden procedure to get more information but had insufficient funds. Before she could be escorted out she explained her alters, their abilities, and offered her DNA as a deal to go through with the procedure.

Jane watches Heinrich die

Although she succeeds at killing him, Jane is unsettled by Hienrich's final words.

She was then introduced to Heinrich Von Fuchs, who offered her the chance to have her alters eradicated, to which she declined. After feeling provoked, she admitted to knowing Niles and Heinrich's hive-mind Nazis surrounded her. Jane, with the help of Flit, Hammerhead, and Silver Tongue, killed them all along with Heinrich. She met up with Cliff and Larry and with the help of Sun Daddy, destroyed the lab. Meeting with Vic and Rita outside, she handed Rita the puppet of Niles and they boarded Vic's jet.[5]

One morning, according to Hammerhead Jane was taking a break for the rest of the day.[6] When Jane returned, she was with Cliff in the living room, where Niles was miraculously standing. Before she could welcome him she was stopped and they were confronted by Mr. Nobody once again. Using his ability to control time itself, Niles was taken and Victor's arm cannon malfunctioned and repelled everyone in the room.

While painting outside, Jane got the sudden realization and urge to talk about a group called the Doom Patrol.[2]

Feeling broken[]
Jane, Vic, and Cliff research the Doom Patrol

Jane, Vic, and Cliff make an effort to learn about the Doom Patrol

Jane was in Niles' lab looking at all of her documented interviews. When Cliff came by and offered a plate of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, specifically for Baby Doll, Jane threw it on the floor and shut the door on him. She watched a video of Baby Doll speaking to Niles and got rather emotional. However, Niles mentioned the Doom Patrol, which peaked her interests. She approached Vic and told him that Mr. Nobody asked her to find them. Jane, along with Cliff and Vic, looked into the Doom Patrol and learned that they were a superhero group that randomly fell off the radar. Much to Jane's surprise, Rita shared a romantic past with one of the members, Steve Dayton, also known as Mento. Although Larry and Rita were opposed to it, Jane argued with them about it until Flit suddenly took over and teleported them to the Doom Patrol's house. Jane encountered Arani Desai and Rhea Jones but started off on the wrong foot. Joshua Clay stopped them before things could escalate.

Joshua welcomed Jane and Larry into their headquarters and enlightened Jane on the Doom Patrol building now being a school. He even showed her a bedroom Niles had prepared for her. When Jane informed him that Niles was missing, he took her aside for a private talk. Jane was told a story of a time where the Doom Patrol faced Mr. Nobody and what seemed like a victorious win. However, the atmosphere of the school suddenly changed, appearing to be bleak and abandoned. That is when she was told the school was not really a school after all. While she waited alone in his office, Jane was pursued by a tidal wave of puzzle pieces and a haunting voice that constantly said: "sweet, sweet, baby". Somehow, the illusion ceased and Joshua explained to Jane, Larry, and Rita that, in reality, the Doom Patrol lost when fighting Mr. Nobody and that they having been suffering ever since. Therefore, Mento uses his power to keep the false illusions going. This saddened Jane, leading her to wonder why Niles would want to send her there. Joshua, however, was unable to give her a reassuring answer. She was told that Mr. Nobody sent her there because he wanted to send her a message on what happens when he is crossed.[7]

Jane shows the painting of Vic

Jane shows everyone the disturbing painting created by the Hangman's Daughter.

As per usual, Hammerhead was in control. When Jane realized that Hammerhead was going elsewhere but Vic's meeting, Jane resurfaced and encouraged themselves to attend. After having an unpleasant interaction with Cliff, Hammerhead took over and went to the room consisting of Nile's documented videos of Jane. When Jane returned, she reminisced over footage of her and Niles but Hammerhead reemerged to destroy the video cassettes, remembering that Niles wanted to treat her like the Doom Patrol. Hammerhead and Jane relentlessly fought over control of their body. To Jane's dismay, all of her documented information was destroyed. Jane returned to her bedroom and cried until she felt a massive tremor. She walked into the living room where she saw Cliff going on a rampage and referring to her as his daughter, Clara. Vic knocked sense into him and suggested that they have a therapy session. Instead of sharing anything personal, Flit assisted Jane and retrieved a painting of Vic. Jane showed it to the group, which stunned everyone. Her antics angered Cliff and he insulted her and her alters. This upset her and she stormed out of the manor.[8]

Karen and the Underground[]

Jane speaks to Kay's personalities

Jane is confronted by the other alters in the Underground.

After leaving Doom Manor, Jane became depressed and managed to allow Karen to take control.[9] While in the Underground, Jane witnessed Karen being dragged back by Hammerhead. When Jane was noticed, she was stopped by the other alters. Although Jane refused to go back to the surface, they all encouraged her to go because not only was it her duty as a host but it left them all vulnerable. Hesitantly, Jane boarded the train that transported her back to "the surface" of Jane's body. While on the train, she spoke to Driver 8 and expressed the difficulties of being a host. Jane then noticed the emergency brake and alluded to pulling it. Driver 8, who empathized with Jane, encouraged Jane to trigger it so she could buy her time.

Jane wandered off to a serene memory deep in the underground and encountered Penny Farthing. However, Jane became concerned when she and Penny could not figure out who the particular memory belonged to. So Jane went off on a journey to figure it out herself. She eventually approached the Sisters for answers. The Sisters told Jane in order to get answers, she must go to the well. When exiting, Jane caught Penny eavesdropping. Although Penny understood Jane's stress, she advised not going to the well. Penny reminded Jane of what happened when Miranda, the previous host, was told the same thing by the Sisters. Jane harshly refused Penny's help and walked away. Elsewhere, she stumbled across memories of her being taken back to the sanatorium after sneaking out and having interviews with Niles. Much to her surprise, she encountered Cliff in the flesh accompanied by Penny. Cliff begged Jane to come back until Jane admitted that she could not handle being on the surface anymore. She shunned them a final time and proceeded onward. She encountered a final alter, Black Annis, who inspected her before letting her pass. Jane walked through a memory that resembled Kay's home. Finding Kay, Jane learned that the initial memory was a replica of a scenery on Kay's puzzle—a puzzle she tried to complete before her abuse.

Jane condemns Daddy

To prevent him from hurting her or Cliff anymore, Jane denounces Daddy.

Ultimately, Jane was taken and brought to the well by the memory of her father. She stood on the edge of the well in a trance-like state. When a swarm of puzzle pieces poured out of the well, Jane was saved by Cliff. The swarm of puzzle pieces took the form of Jane's father, known as Daddy. When Daddy attacked Cliff, Jane became outraged and vocally expressed her hatred for him. Daddy eventually disappeared and cowered back into the well. After that, Cliff and Jane peacefully returned to the train, where Jane was obviously thankful for his efforts. When she returned to the surface, she found herself in a bridal dress and was welcomed back by Vic and Rita, who dealt with an ordeal themselves while she was unconscious.[10] Uninterested, she walked off and went to her bedroom to rest. However, she could still hear Daddy's voice whispering in her head.[11]

Saving Vic and Flex[]

After announcing a team meeting, Jane thought about her time in the underground before she was approached by Rita. She was told that she wanted an apology, specifically from Karen. Jane let Rita know that she could not do anything about that. When Cliff showed up, she was furthermore offended that Vic and Larry did not bother to attend. She was eventually informed about the Beard Hunter and a missing clue in a magazine given to Vic by Danny the Street. Right away, Jane was able to figure out that the missing clue pointed to a man named Flex Mentallo. On another note, Cliff wanted to see his daughter after Bump Weathers died. Cliff openly asked Flit for assistance and Rita was also in support of this. Although Jane heavily objected, she was eventually taken over by Flit. When Jane returned back to the Manor without Cliff and Rita, she proceeded to look into Flex Mentallo and learned that he had a wife named Dolores but requested that Vic help look for her.

Jane tries to stop an assault

Jane steps away from Vic to help a random woman being harassed by a random man.

Jane and Vic took the bus to a park-like area where they waited for Delores. Meanwhile, Jane could tell something was going on with Vic internally. When she asked him to be open with her, Vic told her about his mistrust with Grid and that he feared it was consuming him. They related to one another for a brief moment on what it felt like to have something uncontrollable inside of them. Suddenly, they overheard what sounded like a man harassing a woman. To defuse the situation, Jane chased after them and the strange woman ran off. The man, however, attempted to subdue Jane. Hammerhead took over and saved her by breaking his arm after their punches collided. Jane chased after him but he jumped into a truck with the same woman, this time as the driver. After they drove off, Jane realized that Vic was missing.[12]

When Jane returned to Doom Manor, she explained what happened to Vic and that his captors were wearing pins that symbolized connected them with the Bureau of Normalcy. Larry informed them that he was one of their greatest assets in the past. Jane, along with Rita, was both opposed to the suggestion of calling Silas, but Silas happened to arrive. Over time, they all agreed to go the Ant Farm to save Vic and break him out. Before leaving they all devised a plan to purposely get captured and work separately. They disguised themselves as affiliates of the Bureau and managed to sneak in. Instantly, they are exposed and Jane is shot with a tranquilizer that knocked her out instantly.

Jane is bored of Dirk

Jane requests Dirk to get on with the butchering to avoid listening to his music.

She woke up in a room retrained to a chair with Dirk Ellis, the agent who's arm broken, in the same room. While he threatened and prepped to dismember her, Dirk danced to "The Sign" by Ace of Base. Jane lacked any show of fear or intimidation. This angered Dirk and made him hit the radio, causing "They Don't Know" by Tracey Ullman to play instead. This prompted Karen to jump out once again. When Jane returned, she was freed from her restraints, reunited with Rita and Vic, and Dirk was knocked unconscious by Hammerhead. They proceeded to save Larry and freed other prisoners. However, in the process, they freed feral, carnivorous buttocks that attacked Darren Jones and his party before they could harm the team. When they finally found Vic, he was holding an injured Silas in his arms, sobbing.[13] Cliff tells Jane to talk to Flit to get them out of there. Jones forces close to captured them then Flit took over and teleport them with Flex Mentallo out of there and back to Doom Manor.

Saving Niles[]

After teleporting them back to Doom Manor, Flit teleports Vic and his father to the hospital. She is back, and when Rita tells Jane that Vic can't be alone right now, Jane decided to teleport her to be with them. When she comes back, Cliff begins celebrating, which annoyed her. She explained to Cliff that Vic nearly beat his father to death. Cliff said: That terrible, but we saved him and found Flex Mentallo which can help find Niles. Later she and Cliff try to help Flex remember, he was even showing comic book with him on it, but it doesn't work. Then they try making him look like his old self by having off his jumpsuit , cutting his hair, and shaving his beard. While helping Flex change to Cliff asks Jane how she and everyone at the underground are which angered her. After they made him look like his old self he still wasn't convinced that he is Flex Mentallo, then said remembers once show is on soon, it frustrated her and Cliff. Later Flex was on TV, Jane suggest that if Cliff would smash the TV it can trigger his powers. But when he did it, this made Flex cry. Later at night Flex and Cliff watching a show with Cliff on it as guest star. Jane came in the room, in surprise asked if that was him, when he replied, she teased him, She talk to Cliff telling him they will do everything to get Flex's memories back, then planned to make him think they are going to torture him which they aren't really. Cliff disagreed with that, bringing up the time he had with her at the underground, which angered her and she told him to kill himself. Cliff apologized for the things he saw underground and he tried to help by talking about it, which Jane denied. Then Larry walked to the room to tell them he knows how to get Flex's memories back, by finding Dolores, his wife. Jane agrees with that idea saying she'll handle her, teleporting to her. Then Flit teleports back with Dolores. She watched as Flex and Dolores reunite with Cliff and Larry. Then they witnessed Dolores die. While Cliff was comforting Flex after losing Dolores, Jane saw Larry wasn't consious and asked Cliff if he was okay. When Larry collapsed she runs over to asking him what happened to him while her hand was on his arm. He tells her and Cliff his body run it's course, couldn't years ago when the plane crashed but negative spirit kept him alive. When Cliff tell negative spirit to get in, refusing to let him go, the Negative Spirit flied off but later decided to come back and saved Larry. Rita returned, telling everyone she is ready to save Niles. Jane along Cliff and Larry also decided they'll save him too.

The next day she, Rita, Cliff .Larry, and now Flex took their bus to find the Beard Hunter. When they were driving spot Danny the Street. The drove into the street. When the got off the bus they weren't impress by street. Then Danny greeting Larry. They saw balloon saying Larry she thought was Larry was popular here. Mr.Nobody tell her and other this to real and they have their old life without their accidents. Mr.Nobody then proceeded to tell her that she now doesn't have worry about her other 63 alters doing bad-destructive things due to him now offering her the chance to avoid the incident that gave them their powers.

However, despite the credibility of Mr. Nobody being able to fulfill his offer, the other 63 alters refused and decide to go through with the experiment instead and receive their powers, all except Jane. Jane, who felt guilty and stressed by the often violent actions done by her alters and her having to deal with the aftermaths felt that it was better for herself and the rest of the world if she never received her powers, she then began barricading inside her room and preventing herself or any of the other alters from being experimented on and chose to instead accepting Mr. Nobody's offer in order to protect normal people from her alters antics. Angered by this, Hammerhead proceeded to take over their shared body so that she could get out their hospital room and get their powers.

This in turn caused both her and Jane to enter into a fierce argument over protecting others from themselves that then caused Hammerhead to viciously state that this was the "greatest day of their life, the day we got some bite to our bark" while excitedly removing the barricades to the door. Despite Jane's resistance, Hammerhead managed to violently regain control of their body as she says that she does not care the about the welfare of regular people and that they were suppose to protect "the girl ". She continues remove the barricade to get their powers. • She is the Doom Manor's voicemail.[9]
  • She dislikes Ace of Base.[13]
  • According to her actress, Jane herself is a lesbian. Thus explaining why Jane was more aggressive with demanding Jane keep Karen from sleeping with her "boyfriend".
    • Proven for real with her relationship with Shelley Byron, whom pleasures Jane while in fog form.
  • Jane is based off Kay's grandmother, Jane.
  • Jane has DID, and while most of the show does not represent how to properly address someone who has a system, it does correctly have Jane state that she respects her system and that she has no control over them. In many DID systems, there is a primary alter that stays present, but may switch out with "protectors" when need be (i.e. Hammerhead, Baby Doll, etc.). A system can also have dozens, up to hundreds of alters. For more information on DID it is suggested to look at recent medical journals.
