"Dead Patrol" is the third episode of the third season of Doom Patrol. It premiered on HBO Max on September 23, 2021.
Synopsis[]
After waking up in the tunnel of souls, the Doom Patrol must confront their own personal purgatories. Back in the manor, Dorothy and Larry consult a highly speciaized detective agency to help reach their friends.
Plot[]
In the afterlife, a Watcher transports Rita, Jane, Vic and Cliff in a boat on a lake while the group argues about being killed, which Jane doesn't care about and they try to escape until they pass out, except for Rita, who pretends to be passed out while being carried away by the Watchers. At the Doom Manor, Larry is saddened by the Negative Spirit until he hears the doorbell ring for four packages, discovering that his best friends' body inside them, causing him to break down and unleash his hatred for the spirit. Inside the Tunnel of Souls, Rita watches as she, Cliff, Jane, and Vic are led through their process to finally be dead.
In his personal purgatory, Cliff walks down a street, bumping into his father and telling him about his new life as a robot. Vic trips over some rocks on a mountain, realizing that he is climbing with his mother Elinore and follows her. Jane meets with Kay and her grandmother, Jane, and Kay introduces her alter ego. Dorothy returns to the manor, meeting Larry and learning that her friends died, but Larry put bandages on them so they would survive until her burial, which Dorothy found strange and Larry thought the same, starting to cry and Dorothy suggested making pancakes. In the kitchen, Larry and Dorothy make pancakes together until Larry freaks out at the sight of Rita's face in the batter, considering the possibility that she is still alive and Dorothy opts to ask for help.
In London, the Dead Boy Detectives investigates a case involving a possessed homeless man and Crystal Palace argues with Edwin Payne about that despite her paranormal powers, she may die until Charles Rowland interrupts, noticing the presence of Danny the Ambulance and the trio of friends leaves with him. Larry and Dorothy welcome Edwin, Charles and Crystal to the manor and realize that Edwin and Charles are ghosts. Larry couldn't believe they were experts because they charged, but Dorothy promised to pay them for their services. Inside the manor, Edwin looks at the corpses and Larry explains his grieving state. Dorothy argues with Crystal about being a psychic and she mentions that she will need someone with a strong connection to Rita as a conduit, so Dorothy suggests to Larry.
Cliff talks to his father about life in the afterlife and watches as he brutally murders a unicorn, getting angry at his father for being cruel, and reveals that Clara had a son, shocking his father. As Kay plays, Jane and Grandma bond over how they had tried to protect Jane from Arthur Challis, but now Kay might be better off without her father's cruelty. Vic is happily reunited with his mother, telling her how Silas and S.T.A.R. Labs turned him into a Cyborg, impressing Elinore and asking her son not to blame himself for his death. Vic also tells her about her failed relationship with Roni, but Silas wouldn't let her help her, though Elinore didn't care about Silas' opinion, showing her pride to Vic, and gave him a stone to keep walking. During her ritual to talk to Rita, Crystal explains Edwin and Charles's abilities, before seeing the sex ghosts, helping them to disappear to continue with the safe word of "turnip". As a conduit, Rita possesses Larry's body to talk about the tunnel, before being taken over by an unknown figure trying to help her. The detectives are about to leave, but Larry and Dorothy try to talk them out of leaving so they can help them go to the afterlife.
Knowing that Dorothy lost her father and mother, Crystal decides to help them, convincing her two ghost friends, even though they are wanted by Death. Larry is chosen to go with Edwin and Charles, despite not being dead, and is knocked out by Crystal so astral projection could make him a ghost temporarily. Edwin and Charles guide Larry on his journey through the afterlife and Edwin noticed his fear of Death. Charles comments that Death is in good shape and quite nice, it's her followers that need to be feared.
While watching his father dissect the unicorn, Cliff criticizes him for loving Clara after the accident with Kate because he wanted to have a second chance again, and was angry with his father until he continued on his way to the afterlife, finding his car. racing and woke up in the tunnel. Since he had his friends' belongings to communicate with, Doroth and Crystal realized that Cliff wasn't dead. Before reaching the afterlife, Edwin explained that they had to lower a lever that showed his greatest pain and Larry offered to do it, but Edwin avoided it because he had to be the one to do it, pulling the lever while remembering the massacre where he died, managing to open the doors. gates to your destination.
Having fun in her purgatory, Jane considered living with them, but the grandmother advised her to use her pain in favor to move on and showed her the dolls she made, which were based on the personas of The Underground, among the dolls, was Jane's form, and Kay explained to her alter that she was named after her grandmother, also named Jane. After saying goodbye, Jane woke up in the tunnel along with Cliff. Already in the afterlife, Charles panicked about crossing the water, since he had died of hypothermia and Larry talked to Edwin about his possible romantic feelings towards Charles, which Edwin denied, but if so, it would not be possible. Larry advised the teen not to be afraid of his true sexuality, which Edwin appreciated, and the three continued on their way. Vic and Elinore came to a tree with stones, since Elinore had a habit of placing them, and asked Vic to ascend to her beyond. Before leaving, Vic asked his mother why Silas chose to weaponize him and if there was another way to be saved. Without answering Vic, Elinore and her son shared one last hug and Vic found his slipper, waking up in the tunnel.
From the manor, Dorothy talked with Crystal about her desire to be able to communicate with Niles and heard the story of how Crystal lost her memories of her parents because of a demon named David and had been saved by Edwin and Charles, joining them to take revenge from David. Crystal advised Dorothy not to grieve at the manor and find a way to communicate with her father and the two girls became friends. Cliff, Jane, and Vic orchestrated a hasty escape to escape the tunnel, encountering several Watchers. Frightened, Rita tries to hide and Larry, Edwin and Charles manage to find her along with Vic, Jane and Cliff, and Edwin gets mad at Cliff for killing the Watchers.
The group was surprised by the Night Nurse who was surprised to see Edwin and Charles, ordering them to go with her, but Charles refused and hit her with his magic bat, showing the nurse's true form. Fearlessly, Edwin rebelled against the nurse and the group was ready to fight until the mysterious figure appeared to say goodbye to Rita, calling her "Mindy", and kissed her hand, asking her not to see her sweat. The stranger addressed the nurse, buying the group time to flee, and Rita watched as the stranger was killed. Fleeing from the nurse and her watchers, the group and the detectives got into the boat and Cliff mocked the nurse, who took out a kind of green vomit against them, however, the group did not care, and they celebrated that they managed to escape while they revived in the real world.
Returned to normal, Rita talked to Larry about the spirit's departure and its mysterious ally in the afterlife as she remembered finding herself in Codsville. Cliff and Jane agreed to get together to get help with their problems. Vic used her laptop to further investigate Roni's location. Dorothy announced to her friends that she was going away for a while to travel with the detectives and Larry wished her luck in finding what she was looking for, teasing Edwin because it was obvious, and Charles was happy that Edwin and Larry became friends because of their personalities. Dorothy and the detectives said goodbye to their friends and set off on their new adventures. Shortly after the teens left, the group watched the mysterious traveler walk by casually, and Jane demanded to know who she was, before the traveler asked if anyone wanted tea.

- In the comics, Death is a woman, one of the Endless siblings. She is rather sweet and patient to the deceased. Its why the boys say they dont have to worry about her.
- Larry is understandably cracking up. He's lost what little human companionship he had and would he utterly alone at the manor.
