"Doom Patrol" is the first episode of the fourth season of Doom Patrol. It premiered on HBO Max on December 8, 2022.

Synopsis[]

As they struggle to function as a cohesive group, the Doom Patrol are confronted by a horrifying realization in the future.

Plot[]

In 2042, an old Vic wanders through now-destroyed Cloverton, before feeling a tremor, releasing his makeshift battle gear. Returned to the present, Doctor Harrison discusses the traumas of her teammates, whose official name is the Doom Patrol. At Cloverton Credit Union, Rita leads the Doom Patrol in a battle against the criminal Codpiece, who shoots the team with a beam from his technological penis. Harrison recounts Rita's role as leader and by naming each one after heroes: Cliff is Robotman, Harrison is Crazy Jane, Larry is Negative Man, Vic is Cyborg, Laura is "Dogshit McGivens" and Rita is Elasti-Woman, now traveling with the time machine next to Rog's head, using jellyfish to not forget his memories. Back in the battle, Cliff agrees to be called "Clifasaurous" by Rita, making a distraction and Codpiece shoots him with lightning bolts until Rita uses her powers to stop him, surrounding Laura to make a distraction. Codpiece begins sexually taunting Rita because of his peculiar weapon.

Harrison explains Rita's traumatic derangement from losing Malcolm DuPont and Cliff's low intelligence, who had regained his old robot body, except for his right arm due to the Testicle Monster attack. Cliff tries to attack Codpiece, becoming paralyzed by Parkinson's. Harrison discusses Vic's new role as tech support having no powers, a role Vic disliked and was confronted by Stewart's ass cannon, but Rita saved him, claiming Vic for almost dying. Desiring to pursue happiness, Vic attempted to contact his old friend, Deric Hayes. Larry and Keeg attempted to attack Codpiece, failing as Larry lamented that he was not in a relationship with someone, even though he was happy with Keeg. To distract the villain, Laura transformed into Codpiece, taunting him with a small version of her weapon. Harrison explains Laura's need to make amends for her past actions. Harrison finally moved against Codpiece, successfully convincing him to surrender, securing victory for the Doom Patrol, whom Harrison regarded as the El Dorado of psychological disorders. In The Underground, Harrison confronts Jane for not looking for Kay with the others, assuming that Jane was at Abuelita's old house to escape her responsibilities as the ex-host.

Vic and Silas team up for an experiment and Vic talks about his technical mission against Cell Phone Sylvia and then talks to Silas about finding his happiness by retiring his team, a decision that Silas totally accepted, wishing his son luck, asking him to call the team with the alarm. To the surprise of the team, Cliff discovers that Vic and Silas repaired his arm, now with the sense of touch in one finger, making Cliff happy, who instead of experimenting, claimed to want to touch Rory for the first time, putting on a glove so he wouldn't touch nothing, deciding to go to Florida with the machine, something that Rita denied and the Doom Patrol ended up convincing her to celebrate. Alone, Laura tells Rita her idea of ​​leaving the manor to live in another house after the trip to Florida due to her conflicts with Rita, a decision that made Rita happy, forcing Laura to use a jellyfish during the trip to Florida. During the ride, Cliff, Shipley, and the Doom Patrol sing "Sweet Caroline" while talking about the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man, before Vic interrupts them, informing that a woman was in the time stream, discovering that it was Isabel Feathers, and Laura tells how she met her when she first arrived.

As a result of the crash, the team accidentally changed their course to an unknown year, looking at the city in ruins, getting stranded because the machine was overheating, heading to the manor to discuss what year they were in. The Doom Patrol finds the manor evicted, finding a plate with sausages and skittles, which Cliff accidentally touches, causing the entire team to be trapped in a cage until he is shocked to see the elderly Vic, shocking the young Vic to see his future self, who offered to give them information. Future Vic communicates to the team how the world was destroyed due to the Zombie Were-Butts virus, an event that was dubbed "the Buttpocalypse", worrying the team because a Butt had infected everyone, listening to Future Vic mentioned that his future Doom Patrol was in their rooms, except for Laura, who had disappeared before the Buttpocalypse, and took young Vic for a walk. In the rooms, Rita, Harrison and Cliff see themselves dead as ghosts, but Larry finds nothing in his room. Rita tries to talk to her future self, mentioning that she knew she was doing the same scene she did in The Return of Ghost Gal, Ghost Gal's Gal Pal, frustrating the future Rita at being found out, agreeing to talk to her.

Rita assumed that they all died because the team did not follow their great plan or Laura betrayed them, doubts that the future Rita denied, explaining her bad leadership. Harrison argued with her future self, learning that Kay from the future died, unlike his present version, starting a philosophical discussion, where future Harrison complained to his past version about not having left the manor to get away from the team, although Harrison he stayed to experiment after taking control. Laura investigated the book of the missing persons in the Buttpocalypse, observing how there were plans to travel in time, which mentioned her. Cliff chats with his future self, hearing various lies about Clara and Rory's well-being and his death from Parkinson's, demanding the truth from his future self, for which future Cliff confesses that he could never touch Rory, making Cliff sad. Larry finds his future self in his nursery, watching him cry while asking to see future Keeg, discovering that his future self was no longer fused with future Keeg, being surprised to see him as an adult, asking him to speak to him to help and Keeg leaves to talk to his future self, discovering something disturbing, before going back inside Larry. Laura finds the blueprints for the time machine that her future self was making until she freed Vic, discovering that future Vic was going to steal the machine.

45 minutes ago, knowing that the Doom Patrol of the past would go to 2042, future Vic and the Doom Patrol of the future decided to set them up to steal the machine and avoid their terrible fate. Vic confronts his future self before he boards the machine, arguing about not noticing how to change history, discovering that one decision of his screwed everything up and he was helped by the team to demand to know how to avoid the grim future, before seeing the Zombie Were-Butts arrive, accepting help from the team from the past to fight the monster creatures, managing to kill some Butts. In the fight, the Doom Patrol decided to run away as there were too many Were-Butts to defeat, but Vic refused to accompany them, fighting side by side with his future depowered selves until Laura took the form of Silas, distracting the two Vics to Rita put the Vic from the past in the machine, leaving the future Vic to fight the Zombie Were-Butts alone. Before the team left, future Vic left a message for his past self in the machine, before being killed by a Zombie Butt and the Doom Patrol returned to 2022 with the machine destroyed, leaving her speechless from what they saw. Vic read the message from his future self: "You can't have it all."

Larry attempted to communicate with Keeg about the information from the future, demanding answers from him about their separation, asking him to write a note as to his previous Negative Spirit, though Keeg retreated throughout the manor. Harrison visits Jane, hearing her claim that if she took a break from her pressures as the primary host, ordering Harrison to return to office and saw her disappear as soon as she saw Kay, who asked Jane to stop following her, allowing her to wake up again as the body hostess now with a puzzle bag. Laura reunites with Rita to find out about the coincidence of her meeting Isabel on the time stream, angering Rita, who began to melt that Laura was no longer leaving the manor. Vic finally texts Deric to win back their friendship. Cliff drew a face similar to Rory's on his glove, planning to end the Buttpocalypse and then reunite with his family. Willoughby Kipling and the Knights Templar reunites with Bunbury in his base, listening to his doomsday prophecy, which surprises Kipling because he couldn't believe him. When Bunbury insisted that flora and fauna never made mistakes, Kipling believed his ally, remembering that the prophecy only spoke of the Were-Butts, thinking that they were really screwed if the new threat was real, showing an image that pronounced: Immortus Will Rise.
