Elena Challis is Kay Challis's biological mother and wife to Kay's abusive father.

As seen during Miranda's memories, Elena was shown to be a dutifully religious woman with a docile personality, with Miranda having implied that Kay's mother had long since known or suspected of her husband's highly abusive, territorial, obsessive behavior and his various other abuses to their daughter. But likely due to her own fear of him and the possible repercussions if news of her husband’s behavior became known, Elena was shown to have taken a biddable stance in her husband's behavior and essentially enable his abuse towards their only daughter, earning the hatred and contempt of many of Kay's personalities.
Due to her compliance to do nothing for her husband's abuse and violent actions and fear of what might happen to her if she intervened, Elena was shown to have developed a severe sense of self-loathing and guilt for her inability to put a stop to it and resulted in her becoming painfully religious in her attempt to bury her guilt. As seen where she immediately prayed to God after Kay exorcism, thanking him due to her believing that her having her daughter's "demons" removed from her also purified their past sins and that they are now once again "clean".
However despite her enabling of her husband’s behavior, Elena has shown to possess a level of maternal care for Kay, as seen where she was greatly distressed with Kay's erratic behavior and attempted to have her exorcised by their preacher to help her. Although this was later implied to have been simply done due to her own sense of guilt and self loathing due to her continued enabling of her daughter's suffering to her husband’s hands.
