"Hi, there. I'm Flex Mentallo, Man of Muscle Mystery."
—Flex Mentallo[src]

Flex Mentallo, also known as Hero of the Beach and Man of Muscle Mystery, is a metahuman with the power to manipulate reality in a variety of ways. Created and brought to life by Wally Sage, Flex acted as a local superhero from Kansas, forming a relationship with Dolores until he was kidnapped by the Bureau of Normalcy and managed to escape with the help of a group of metahuman friends, who helped him recover his memory and meet Dolores for the last time.

Back in action, Flex helped the team enter White Space to rescue Niles Caulder and was tasked with saving the Dannyzens from the arrival of the Brotherhood of Dangerous Animals. Months later, Flex and the Dannyzens returned to the Doom Manor to heal Danny the Street, holding a party, in which Flex helped Rita decipher her powers, accidentally causing the arrival of Shadowy Mister Evans, who was arrested by Hammerhead.

Biography[]

1964s[]

Trapped by the Bureau of Normalcy[]

In the early 60's, Flex walks alongside his wife Dolores, the two on their way to a picnic. Using his powers to summon food for said picnic, Dolores reads a newspaper to Flex regarding his recent victory against the evil Doctor Saucer. The two share a tender moment before a nearby child calls for help; Flex rushes to the scene, spying the child's cat stuck in a nearby tree. Using his powers to lower the branch and return the cat to safety, Flex is suddenly transported to the Ant Farm by beams fired from the cats eyes. The child, a Bureau of Normalcy agent in disguise, radios to his superiors that Flex has been captured.

Meeting Larry Trainor[]

Locked in cell 721, Larry Trainor meets Flex through a crack in the wall separating their cells. The Negative Spirit interacts directly with Flex, the hero begging for it to aid him in escaping the facility. Bureau agents return shortly after though, playing a seemingly live recording of Dolores being tortured by Bureau agents, and threatening Flex with an ultimatum; in the event he refuses to cooperate, she will suffer the consequences. In an effort to prevent her from coming to further harm, Flex forgets his identity as Flex Mentallo, instead assuming the persona of 722 (named for his cell number).

2019[]

Interacting with Victor Stone[]

After the Bureau of Normalcy captured Vic, he was locked in cell 721 of the Ant Farm. Here, Vic meets 722, who is watching a soap opera on a TV given to him by the Bureau. Vic then begins to panic in response to information Grid reveals concerning his father. Despite Grid's attempts to placate him, Vic continues to panic, resulting in Grid restarting the system; 722, however, overhears, telling Grid to shut up. This surprises Vic, who assumes only he can hear Grid's voice.

Escaping from the Ant Farm[]

When the Doom Patrol manage to escape their cells and free all those imprisoned at the Ant farm, 722 recognizes the Negative Spirit that cohabitates with Larry Trainor, but is unsure where he recognizes it from. Having now reconvened with the Doom Patrol, 722 remembers nothing of his past or of the other members of the team, much to their irritation. In the meantime, Vic and Rita are teleported to the hospital by Flit.

Remembering to be Flex Mentallo[]

Cliff and Jane then attempt to help 722 recover his identity as Flex Mentallo. He, however, cannot recognize his own face; to resolve this, they cut his hair and beard, attempting to restore his original visage. This is to no avail, however, as 722 remains confused, returning to idly watching the soap opera he favored while imprisoned. Jane suggests they provoke him to try and restore his powers; this goes poorly however, as Flex instead only becomes irritated at their attempts. Cliff reacts with anger to his teammates apparent identity dissolution, destroying the television, which prompts 722 to begin crying.

Going back to being Flex Mentallo[]

In a soap opera sequence, featuring Cliff as a special guest, Flit manages to find Dolores, who is still under Bureau conditioning. Their reunion is short-lived, however, with a destruction sequence reducing Dolores to ash as the recognizes her husband. This is apparently enough to trigger a sudden restoration of Flex's memories, who once again assumes his identity of Flex Mentallo, vowing to destroy the Bureau of Normalcy. Larry then expresses his condolences regarding the death of Dolores, before Rita arrives, explaining to the team how they can find The Chief.

Helping the Doom Patrol travel to the White Space[]

Flex accompanies the Doom Patrol team on the bus as they travel to Danny the Street, where Larry offers his condolences at Dolores' passing. It is implied Danny and Flex have known each other for a considerable amount of time. Danny then reveals that Mr. Nobody, having been locked up by Niles, is currently imprisoned in the White Space, a dimension located within the blank sections between panels in comic books. Flex utilizes his powers to transport the team to Nile's location; however, upon flexing the incorrect muscle, incidentally causes the team & all surrounding Dannyzens to orgasm. On his second attempt, however, the team are successfully transported into the White Space.

Saving the Dannyzens[]

When The Brotherhood of Dangerous Animals attack Danny by locking them in a painting, Flex manages to rescue all the Dannyzens, transporting them to an unknown location while only the Beard Hunter and Mr. Nobody remain in Peeping Tom's Perpetual Cabaret.

Helping Danny recover[]

Some time later, the displaced Dannyzens arrive at Doom Manor. Maura Lee Karupt, acting on behalf of Danny, seeks to throw a party that will restore Danny to their full strength, as they thrive off of positive energy. With some help from Flex, and a song by Dorothy, Danny is able to recover some of their original strength, now taking the form of a wheel. Upstairs, Rita calls on Flex to aid in helping her clear her mind for better use of her powers; this goes awry, as the 'orgasmic energy' being produced from the Manor invokes the presence of Shadowy Mr. Evans, a sex demon seeking to birth the apocalypse. Thanks to intervention from Jane and The Sex Men, they rid themselves of the threat, and Flex & the Dannyzens are whisked away to safety once more.

Friendship with Dorothy[]

While living in Dannyland, Flex was living in a trailer, where he met Dorothy, to whom he lent a Wally Sage comic, Space Case.

Personality[]

Flex has a personality typical of most early superheroes. Brave and righteous, he always strives to do the right thing and protect others, even if at a grave cost to his own safety.
