"Possibilities Patrol" is the first episode of the third season of Doom Patrol. It premiered on HBO Max on September 23, 2021.

Synopsis[]

Dorothy and the Candlemaker finally face-off, while the Doom Patrol - now freed from their wax encasings - face troubling side effects. Rita holds the key, but is she ready to answer the call?

Plot[]

Dorothy is confronted by Candlemaker, who tries to kill her, but Dorothy shoots an arrow at him, avoiding him and they both appeared on the moon to discuss their battle for destiny, which was pointless, reminding him how he savedManny, and gave him the option to stay forever on the moon or be friends again. At the fair, Vic, Larry, Jane, Cliff, and Rita stop being wax as they watch Dorothy get off Candlemaker, who became their friend again, and the group finds Niles dead of old age, and Dorothy wept loudly at the quick death his father's.

A week later in the Doom Manor, Vic reassembled Cliff's body in the lab, but Cliff's hand began to malfunction, claiming that Niles did it, though they both deduced that Cliff had a brain problem. Larry makes swandiches for Rita before her last practice at the "Our Town" play and he was upset that he was going to be in a play that was about his first trip to Cloverton, and Rita was hopeful that it would be her new start. The duo of friends discussed Niles's body, as Dorothy didn't want to dispose of the body until Jane said goodbye and Rita convinced Larry to talk to the girl. Dorothy looked sadly at her father's corpse and Larry was reunited with her, listening to all his experiences while he was alive, grieving for losing him. Larry encouraged her to have a good future and not cling to the past, sharing an emotional hug, promising that they would both find a way to move on.

In her room, Rita finds a letter that Niles left for her before he died, which contained a key and a message that she was to protect the world from upcoming threats. Jane managed to get out of the Underground pit, finding Kay in a cell putting together a puzzle because of Daddy, and gave her her stuffed animal Harry, telling her that she would find a way to save her. During practice for the play, Rita watches Isabel Feathers perform Rita as "Blob Lady", making Rita sad that she was considered a monster. At the time of acting, Rita left the scene to vent her feelings because people gave her several orders, before beginning to melt, and had to flee after being judged as the true "Blob Lady". Vic meets with Silas to discuss Niles's death and his failed relationship with Roni, as he wanted to give her a second chance. Silas comforts his son for trying to help Roni, mentioning that it hurts when he tries to help the people they love. Jane quickly arrives at the Underground, finding all the personas controlled by Daddy to put puzzles together, so Jane finally confronts the evil personality, and Daddy confesses to not being Daddy or Miranda anymore, humiliating Jane into putting puzzles together with the rest.

Cliff was investigating about his brain problem, before being scared by Niles in his ghostly form, asking Cliff for help to burn his body, which he denied for everything he did, arguing about their behaviors as parents, and Niles confessed that he was the one who he told Clara the truth with the video so that they both reconcile, just like them, however, Cliff did not make friends with Niles again, but thanked him for the gesture. Saddened, Rita is informed by Vic that Micki Harris was calling her and she tried to apologize, but she found out that it was an actress pretending to be Micki to make fun of Rita, making her feel bad. Larry is awakened by the Negative Spirit, hearing several hints of traveling to space and coming home, angering Larry, refusing to help him because Rita was broken by the rejection in her play, he couldn't leave her friend, without realize that Rita was listening to him. Roni was stealing technology from Quorum HQ for more terrorist attacks until Vic called her, arguing to give her a second chance, an offer she refused because she was seeking revenge, and Vic decided to call the police to go after her, ending their talk with Roni, becoming his enemy.

Jane was still putting the puzzle together and Kay appeared on the subway, managing to free her from the trance and help her get back to the surface. Thanks to Niles's advice, Cliff calls Clara to apologize for all the things he messed up, but he ended up finding out that Clara was giving birth to his son. Dorothy comforts the passed out Jane's body to hug her, as they both loved Niles very much, and apologized for what Candlemaker did, crying over the death of Baby Doll. Kay took Jane with a biplane as a way to travel to the surface, thanking the girl for her help, but before the biplane could fly, Daddy shows up to confront her and the personas show up to support Jane and all the personalities try to resist. the strong breeze caused by Daddy, preventing Jane from being able to fly. In the real world, Miranda takes control of the body, shocking Dorothy, who acknowledges that it was not her friend, and despite Candlemaker wishing to fight Daddy's taunts, Dorothy denied it because they would hurt Jane, and Daddy threw Dorothy tightly against a piece of furniture as she danced to commit suicide next to the body.

Quickly, Dorothy calls her friends to save Jane and Daddy attacks Cliff. In order for the plane to fly, Jane was helped by Kay and the personas, using her strength to make the plane fly, unleashing Daddy's anger who became giant to try to stop her, but Jane was able to kill the evil personality, returning to take control before committing suicide. The group manages to find Jane safe and sound. Jane embraces Cliff as her father figure and Rita, Vic, Dorothy and Larry follow him to share an emotional hug. Jane, Kay and the personas gather Daddy's jigsaw puzzle body to celebrate their victory over him, fearing that one day he will come back, and wondering what they would do in the meantime, to which Jane proceeds to eat a puzzle, announcing that she knew sweet, and they all began to eat while sharing a moment of happiness. Larry and Rita talk outside the manor about how they both needed each other, but Rita confessed to being fine, convincing Larry to take his space trip, doubting if he would ever return, something he hoped for, and they both shared a hug. Rita said goodbye to her best friend and also to the spirit, watching them fly.

Vic was listening to a phone call from government people about how Roni was on the run. Cliff was in the hospital with Clara to meet his grandson, Rory, and his broken hand was helping the baby to sleep. Larry returned to his normal self during his journey with the spirit. Jane and Dorothy said their goodbyes and Dorothy got into Danny the Ambulance to bury her father, and Danny teleported in front of Jane. Rita was able to overcome her emotional problems. After a totally quiet week, Rita heard a loud alarm, discovering that a secret phone had been locked and heard of an imminent arrival, but when the phone closed, Rita chose to ignore it.

During the Our Town play, Isabel and her co-stars sing a song about possibilities, receiving several praises from the spectators, and Isabel exits the theater excitedly, before watching as a mysterious machine appears from the ground. From the machine, a mysterious traveler came down looking for Niles and wondering what year it was. The traveler displayed her shape-shifting powers, taking on Isabel's face temporarily, and Isabel freaked out, causing her to die in the hole. Due to the unsuccessful help of Isabel, the traveler decides to look for Caulder on her own, hiding her machine, and began her journey.

In a post-credits scene, Niles remains as a ghost in the manor and is invited to participate in a sexual threesome with other sexual ghosts, however, Niles suddenly disappeared. In Yukon, Willoughby Kipling severed Niles's head from his body as he planned to revive him and proceeded to smoke.
