Looking for ways to achieve longevity, Niles Caulder created a robotic body named "Robotman" as a way to implant his brain and survive, causing racecar driver Cliff Steele to have an accident, which killed his wife Kate and leaving their daughter Clara orphaned. With the support of Elinore Stone, Niles kept Cliff's brain as the only part of him that remained alive, finishing building the robot body, in which he placed Cliff's brain, who upon waking up, had difficulty walk, but remembering his daughter, he was able to continue moving and getting used to living in his new robotic form.

After an explosion accidentally caused by Vic Stone, Cliff's body had a cybernetic piece of Vic inside, causing Silas Stone to tend to him, but because the hole was left, the rat Admiral Whiskers entered Cliff's body, ruining his mind to turn him against his friends. When he was in The Underground, Cliff regained his human form to try to save Crazy Jane, but since the path to The Well prevented him from passing as a man, he finally accepted his robot body, managing to rescue Jane. While searching for the alligator Frances, Cliff paralyzed in the middle of the swamp, being attacked by the alligator, which he was able to kill.

Eventually, Niles, seeking redemption, looked for ways to upgrade Cliff's body, making plans for a model called Robotman 2.0, drawing sketches as possible suggestions, catching the attention of Cliff, who thought that an improvement might be feeling again. Shortly after, Cliff's paralysis in his body increased when he tried to fight some car thieves, being stranded in the middle of nowhere, and unable to defend himself against the imaginary Jesus Christ, who, through the influence of Candlemaker, destroyed the Cliff's body.

Vic managed to repair Cliff's robot body, which was still suffering from paralysis, causing Cliff's hand to move when he spent time with his family, before discovering from Clara that he might have Parkinson's, which Cliff awkwardly tried to deny. Cliff desperately thought of finding a cure for his disease, buying pills online, making him get high every time with them and becoming a lustful gambler, selling his friends' things and the plans for his robot body.

Using the combined blueprints, the former leader of the Brotherhood of Evil, Ultimax, sent Laura De Mille to kidnap Cliff at the Doom Manor, removing the brain. of the robot body to use for his personal use, now planning to live a retired life in Boca Raton, Florida. However, Ultimax's body was crushed by Laura and Cliff, who was placed into a giant robot. Rita Farr found a dying Ultimax, who offered her to join him in his new empire of evil to get revenge on Laura, but Rita refused, preferring to kill him, burning his brain.

Recovered by Cliff[]

Months later, Vic and Silas reconstructed the robotman body to return Cliff to his original body, except that due to the lack of parts due to the attack of a testicle monster, his right arm was his missing part, although it would not prevent Cliff, with the codename Robotman, served as a superhero with the Doom Patrol. Shortly after, Vic and Silas reconstructed Cliff's arm with the ability to feel, making Cliff happy, but he preferred to hide his hand with a glove to feel his grandson Rory for the first time. Despite being restored to his body, Cliff continued to suffer from Parkinson's.

Having surrendered his longevity to Immortus, Cliff's body began to malfunction as his brain aged, increasing his Parkinson's. While trapped in Immortimas Day, Cliff was in his normal appearance, musically arguing with an illusion of himself in his robot body over his advantages and disadvantages in the fake reality until returning to real life, where he returned to his robot body.

Cliff continued to use his robotic body, failing when he attempted to travel to Florida and defend a past Niles from a pair of Nazis. Following the separation of the Doom Patrol, Cliff used his body until his last day with Rory and passed away peacefully, with his body shutting down.
