"And then, in a single moment, I realized I understood absolutely nothing at all."
—Niles Caulder[src]

Doctor Niles Evelyn Caulder, (c. 1881[1] – 2020), also known as the Chief, was the former leader of the Doom Patrol. He was the father of Dorothy Spinner and an experimental doctor and pioneer in medical science. Knowing of Dorothy's danger from her powers, Niles began the Immortus Project, searching for test subjects to achieve immortality and live for Dorothy. He searches the world for those he believes are in need of a safe place to heal, such as Rita Farr, Larry Trainor, Kay Challis and Cliff Steele.

Some time later, Niles was kidnapped by Mr. Nobody until he was rescued by his patients, but to free them from Nobody, Niles revealed that he was responsible for their accidents, causing everyone to get angry with him. He managed to reunite the team to travel to a painting to save Dorothy and Danny from Ezekiel and Admiral Whiskers.

After sacrificing his immortality, Niles began looking for some way to stay alive. Niles traveled to Yukon to search for Slava, but upon discovering that she died, Niles and Kipling made a plan to prevent Dorothy from releasing Candlemaker. Not having much time left, Niles and Dorothy went to a fair to spend one last day together, but in the evening, Candlemaker broke free. Niles tried to ask Dorothy not to fight, but she accepted her fate and went to confront Candlemaker.

Eventually, Niles passed away, but Kipling later brought him back to life. When his friends were saved from Darren Jones, Niles sacrificed his life to stop them from being zombies.

Biography[]

1888[]

Encounter with Red Jack[]

Niles Caulder in 1888

In Witchapel, London, Niles was walking in the streets at night and was stopped by a police officer. The officer warned Niles to watch out for the ripper, but ignoring his warning, he stole the officer's watch. Niles sat in the alley and saw a woman being killed by Red Jack. Jack approached Niles, but he did not flee from him. After Jack murders the woman, Niles sees butterflies emerge from the corpse of the woman.

1910s[]

Bureau of Oddities[]

Just before World War I, Niles Caulder was a founder and lead researcher of the Bureau of Oddities, a government organization dedicated to researching the supernatural.

Oyewah[]

During one investigation in Northern Yukon in 1913, Niles and fellow researcher Alistair were viciously attacked by wolves. As Alistair told Niles to run, he tripped and fell down a hill, breaking his leg. Niles then encountered a large creature with the attributes of a bear, wolf, deer, and other animals, before falling unconscious.

Niles awoke in a cave with a primitive, hairy woman with several animal skins as clothes. While at first she was very hostile toward Niles while he healed, they eventually grew close as they gave a makeshift funeral for the bodies of a few hunters who had been killed presumably by the woman. During the funeral, Niles realized with the help of cave paintings and markings that the woman, dubbed Oyewah, was a part of a tribe of ancient humans from possible prehistoric times, imbued with immortality and powerful psychic abilities, which allow her to create avatars such as the animal he had seen before.

Niles and Oyewah began to live together, hunting and living a simple yet fulfilling life that Niles described as his happiest. He and Oyewah eventually became romantically involved, which eventually ended in tragedy as Alistair found Niles again, telling him of the changes that had happened in the outside world and with the Bureau of Oddites, now renamed the Bureau of Normalcy.

Knowing that Alistair's intent was to capture Oyewah and give her to the Bureau, Niles tricked him into falling into broken ice, drowning him. Niles then, in order to protect his love, destroyed his journal of the events and rejoined the Bureau, under the story that he had been surviving on his own until he was found, with nothing to report. From that point on, Niles' mission in life was to protect Oyewah and other 'oddities' like her, from the "true monsters in the world," such as the Department of Normalcy.[2]

1927[]

Dorothy[]

Niles went to a carnival and Niles entered a circus and mingled with the public to find a person in the circus and they call her "the girl with the monkey face" who was Niles's daughter and her daughter's name is Dorothy Spinner. Niles sat and watched the Ringmaster introduce Dorothy and they tortured her and forced her to release Slava's animal friend and Niles was excited to see him and they tortured the animal avatar and the audience threw things at him and Niles asked everyone to stop doing it and Dorothy angrily made her first wish to Candlemaker and Candlemaker emerged and murdered everyone in the audience and the people in the neighborhood except Niles and Niles talked to Dorothy and Niles showed her his drawings of his animal friend and Niles revealed to Dorothy that it his daughter and Dorothy found out that Niles is her father and Niles took Dorothy from the circus and they both walked to a safe place for her.

Some time later, Niles hid Dorothy in Danny who at that time was an alley and hid her so that she would be safe and Niles undertook his search for immortality to protect Dorothy and the world from her and prevent Dorothy from freeing Candlemaker and bring about the end of the world. In his long investigations, Niles discovered how the parts of the deity Immortus were divided into parts, planning to acquire a talisman that could preserve his life. Using the recluse Wally Sage, Niles mentored him to help him find the talisman, convincing him to send an albino donkey to track the relic.

1940s[]

Stopping Von Fuchs[]

Shortly after World War 2, a crazed scientist and former Nazi Heinrich Von Fuchs, was conducting human tests for a steep price. These tests were capable of transforming normal humans into Metahumans using energy from other dimensions. Eric Morden a low-level supervillain, was receiving his powers until Niles intervened. Aware of how dangerous these experiments were, Niles shot Dr. Fuchs and shut down Morden's experiment, also stealing a large amount of money Morden spent for the procedure. Niles believed he killed both Von Fuchs and Morden but using his own perverted science, Von Fuchs managed to survive, hooked up to machines for the rest of his life. Morden also survived and would vow revenge on Caulder.

1950s[]

Immortus Project[]

After the birth of his daughter, Niles became afraid of her power and wished to find a way to become immortal so he could always keep her safe. He used his connections with the Bureau of Normalcy in order to fund the Immortus Project where he would research different forms of immortality. This was an ongoing initiative where Niles had to seek out various supernatural phenomenons that could potentially increase his lifespan and expose them to different test subjects. During his project, Niles showed Wally the talisman acquired to be with Dorothy, but upon touching it, Wally noted that the forgotten deity could offer him a better life. Even though the project was run under the Bureau of Normalcy, Niles was granted autonomy and set up a facility in Covington, Ohio.

Rescuing Rita Farr[]

After being exposed to a toxic gas in the Amazon, actress Rita Farr’s cellular structure became completely unstable. No doctor was able to help her and soon Rita became insane, wanting to hide away from society locked in an asylum. Niles became aware of Rita’s problem and found her, promising that he could help her. Taking her to his mansion, using his unique scientific knowledge Niles helped her to control her condition and the two became close friends. Although she remained in his manor, Rita was able to maintain some semblance of her old life, frequently watching her old movies with Niles, while continuing her treatments. Niles would later introduce Rita to Steve Dayton to help with her treatments. Steve would use his telepathic powers to help Rita clear her mind and the two would also eventually begin a relationship.

First search for the Negative Spirit[]

In 1955, his next step to try to find immortality, Niles investigated that in space there is a space spark that made the Negative Spirit known and Niles recruited 3 space pilots for that mission and the names of those pilots were, Zip Callahan, Specs and Valentina Vostok and those 3 were cosmonauts and they called themselves the Pioneers of the Uncharted and Niles gave them a rocket ship and sent them into space to find the Spirit but the Pioneers disappeared and presumably died during the mission leaving Niles to continue looking for another subject to find the spirit.

Leading the Doom Patrol[]

Doom Patrol 50s

Throughout the '50s Niles would find the metahumans: Steve Dayton, Arani Desai, and Rhea Jones. The foursome would form the superhero team the "Doom Patrol". Their main mission was to stop the Brotherhood of Evil, a team of dastardly supervillains. They eventually defeated the Brotherhood’s leader Ultimax and the villain team went into hiding.

The Doom Patrol's final mission would be against Eric Morden, now transformed into the powerful Mr. Nobody, but they were defeated and Niles abandoned the Doom Patrol for failing and left them in the care of Joshua Clay and Niles never visited his old team again.

With the Negative Spirit inside him, no other doctor was able to help him, due to a radiation emitted from his body.Niles took Larry out telling him that he rescued him and Niles took Larry to the Doom Manor, where Rita and Larry met and Niles made a special room for Larry and told Larry to live with Rita. To help Larry with his radiation body, Niles designed special bandages to contain his radioactivity, leaving it as a gift in his new room to go in search of a missing research vessel.

Niles thought about helping Larry to stabilize his condition and connection with the Spirit.Although, he wasn't able to separate Larry and the Spirit, Caulder developed a machine that allowed him to briefly communicate with him. Niles continued to treat Larry through the decades, trying to help him understand the spirit and come to terms with himself.

Rebuilding Cliff Steele[]

Niles and Elinore plan to create a robot body for Cliff

Niles tells Elinore about Cliff's accident.

After a horrific car accident around 1988, Cliff Steele was given zero chance of life by his doctors. However, Niles had his own unique methods he wanted to try in order to save Cliff's life. Although his body was destroyed beyond repair, Niles saved Cliff's brain. Later, Niles confessed the truth of his experiments to his old friend, Elinore Stone, to whom he showed that he felt bad about Cliff and his family's accident, so Elinore agreed to help him, sharing a hug with him.

Over the next few years, Niles built Cliff a new robotic body,[3] ignoring any advice from Silas Stone. Unlike his other patients like Rita and Jane, Cliff and Niles developed a fairly antagonistic relationship.[3] Despite his toxicity, Niles interviewed Cliff several times to understand his suffering, deceiving him that his family had died during the accident.

Meeting Willoughby Kipling[]

In the 1990s, Niles met and befriended Willoughby Kipling, an expert on the world's oddities. Together they faced the Cult of the Unwritten Book, managing to momentarily defeat them. On one occasion, Niles and Kipling were in a bar in Istanbul, where Niles was left for dead by Kipling, who needed a drink because Niles was complaining so much. During their time of friendship, Niles told Kipling that his talisman was a piece of Immortus, something he would not believe when thinking that the deity was not real.

Niles Caulder

Niles scolds his patients for leaving town.

By 2019, with Cliff and the rest of the group accustomed to Doom Manor, Niles began to return to secretive missions away from Covington. Returning after a particular one, he found Covington to be a mess, figuring it to be the fault of those in the Manor. The Chief scolded them, explaining how enemies would be brought to the town, and thus they had to move. All but Cliff agreed, and Niles drove them off in Larry's bus. However, the rest of the bus's occupants changed their mind, and they followed Cliff into town, deciding to help the locals. While the others observed an unusual Albino Donkey in the road, Niles was met by Mr. Nobody, much to his shock.[3]

Niles saw people being sucked into the portal and heard Nobody breaking the fourth wall and Niles was surprised that Nobody still believes that he controls the whole story and Nobody replied to Niles that it slipped from his fingers because of last time sending Niles to White Space.[4]

Niles was spinning around the White Space while the angry Mr. Nobody saw the Decreator and was frustrated that he wanted to be the main villain and Niles told Nobody that they can stop him and Morden stopped Niles and Niles talked to him and told him. He said that they must create a cult to summon the Recreator to defeat the Decreator and they will need the help of one of Jane's personalities from the past, Doctor Harrison and Morden agreed to help Niles and Morden would work in 1977 to make Doctor Harrison created the Cult and Niles would go to the present to help the team find the Rewritten Book. Kipling was still surprised that Niles and Morden work together and summoned Oracle and Niles flirted with her and asked him to know where the Rewritten Book is located.

Niles spoke with Vic. Niles repaired Vic's arm and Vic wanted him to stay and Niles told him that his truce with Nobody is only until he finished with the Decreator and they were interrupted by Kipling saying that Baphomet managed to find the Book and Larry told him Niles that Cliff and Jane are in Nurnheim and he got angry because Kipling let them go to that place, and they went on the bus in search of the book and came to a house.

Willoughby Kipling uses the Rewritten Book

Niles said goodbye to Kipling and saw how Cliff and Jane returned from Nurnheim and Niles hugged Jane and told Rita that Elliot is still alive and Rita went to look for him and Niles spoke with Vic, Larry, Cliff and Jane saying goodbye because of their truce with Morden it ended and Vic decided to protect Niles so that he would not be kidnapped again and Cliff, Jane, Vic and Larry were in slow motion and Niles yelled at Nobody telling him that he could say goodbye and Niles was sent back to White Space.[5]

Niles rejects Mr

Niles stayed on the bus to monitor while the others took care of the giant robot and Niles told them that they can talk to him and Cliff talked to the robot and the robot used his lazers and killed the team and Niles yelled for the loss. Again the cycle restarts, Niles calls the team for a briefing and Larry has breakfast prepared and they hear the alarm and they go to the rescue and come to the city to protect the people and stop the robot and Niles told them to try to talk to He and Cliff tried to talk to the robot and the robot crushed them with his foot while Niles screamed for the death of the team. Again Niles calls the team for a briefing and Larry made breakfast and they heard the alarms and went to the rescue but Niles is very familiar and tells the team to be careful. Already in the city the team went to stop the robot and Niles realized what was happening and Niles told the team to run and it was too late because the robot had already killed the team by making Niles another you cry and scream.

Niles reveals the truth

Niles reveals that he was responsible for all of the team's accidents.

The cycle was repeated over and over and over again until when they heard the alarm the team prepared to go and Niles told them not to go which made the team confused and Niles told them that it is a trap made by the Mr. Nobody and I explain that Mr. Nobody made him see them die over and over again and they realized that they didn't actually defeat him and they all see the real Vic arrive and they realized that the fake Vic is actually Mr. Nobody and they got angry because Morden tricked them again and Morden snapped his fingers and they went back to White Space including Vic and Nobody revealed to them that they never left and Nobody revealed to them that they would never beat him but if there is a way to stop everything forever and for everything to return to normal but for that Niles would have to reveal the truth and Niles told the team who cannot bear the truth and the team told him that they have already been through a lot and can bear it and Niles decided to tell them and Niles revealed that their accidents were not accidents and Niles reveals that he was the one who caused all the "accidents" that They turned them into what they are by leaving the team shocked and angry with him.

The team are still angry with Niles because he lied for years and ruined their lives and Niles revealed to them that he did it to have immortality and Cliff wanted to kill Niles and Vic stopped Cliff from doing it and Niles apologized to everyone and Rita cried for that Niles ruined his life and Jane was going to kill Niles and Nobody stopped time and returned the team to the real world saying that now they are free to do whatever they want and Nobody told Niles that he deserves nothing of what he gave for the humanity that he lost including him and Niles asked Nobody that now that he had his revenge what he would do and Nobody replied that he has a very good future ahead of him while Niles would not have a good future and He asked Niles excitedly that he felt like a nobody and Niles had no answer and said goodbye to Niles and sent him back to the real world. Still angry, the team parted ways and they went their separate ways, leaving Niles alone in the Doom Manor.

The team returned to the manor and Niles saw the painting where Danny is trapped and saw that the team arrived and they asked what he wanted now and Niles told them that Mr. Nobody locked Danny in the painting and no one wanted to help him and Niles reveal to them that she has a daughter and that she has exceptional powers and Niles did all that to achieve immortality and live one day longer than her and prevent Dorothy from causing the end of the world and is in danger if Mr. Nobody reaches her do something and Cliff insults Niles by saying that he will never help him and Rita, Larry, Vic and Jane agreed to save Niles' daughter and Danny and Cliff also reluctantly agreed to help and Niles said to stare at the painting and teleported to the painting.

The team toured Danny and Niles saw in a newspaper that Flex managed to save all the Dannyzens and asked Danny where his daughter is, but Danny told the team to look up and see Ezekiel the Cockroach turned into a giant launching cars and they saw Eric Morden running away from Ezekiel and Morden walks into the perpetual cabaret and they followed him. Once inside, the team met with Ernest Franklin, who was singing, and Ernest was excited to see them and told them that Mr. Nobody came to Danny and offered him the best beard hairs and had to tell him where Dorothy was and Ernest apologized to Danny And now also with the team and Niles got upset that Ernest sold Dorothy for a bit. The team spoke with Nobody and Nobody told them that when he found Dorothy he tried to attack her and turned the two plagues into giants and they kicked him out of his own Brotherhood and Niles was upset by what Nobody tried to do and everyone in the Cabaret heard the trembling of Ezekiel's pots and Vic said that they must rescue Dorothy despite everything and began to make a plan to rescue her.

Niles, Vic, Jane and Cliff went out to go to the doll hospital to find Dorothy at the bottom and they felt the tremors again and they saw that Dorothy had also turned Admiral Whiskers into a giant and ate Cliff and Vic shot him to Whiskers to save his friend but Whiskers' scream caused another tremor and Niles fell out of his wheelchair and told Jane to run quickly to the bottom of the doll hospital and Jane was quick while Niles went back to the room. wheelchair hoping Jane will find Dorothy. Niles saw Jane sing to Dorothy the song that Niles always sang to Jane and Niles told Dorothy that everything will be fine and Dorothy trusted both of them and Dorothy came out and Niles asked Dorothy if she wants to know what the inside of a cockroach looks like.

Niles introduces Dorothy to the team.

With the help of Nobody and their narration, Niles, Jane and Dorothy along with Rita and Vic were swallowed by Ezekiel as they had planned the team and Nobody had planned and Cliff was also swallowed by Ezekiel when Whiskers and Ezekiel kissed. Larry used the negative energy releasing the team inside Ezekiel coming out of the painting and killing Whiskers and leaving Nobody and Ernest in the painting. Already in the real world, Danny turned into a brick and Ezekiel returned to his normal size praising his victory but was killed by Vic's lazer and Niles, Cliff, Rita, Jane, Victor and Dorothy came out of Ezekiel and Niles them he introduced the team to his daughter, Dorothy Spinner, and they saw Larry who also came out of the painting and is in his normal size and they realized that they are tiny in size (due to being in Ezekiel, who had returned to his normal size) and Larry took them on top of Danny to the Manor to fix it.
