Doom Patrol Wiki

The Underground was the internal representation of Jane's mind. It houses representations of each of her alters. The Underground is an example of an innerworld, or headspace, a common phenomenon in systems where headmates or alters typically reside when not appearing in place of the primary alter, or "fronting" as it is called. Innerworlds are typically accessed by the host through dissociation.

History[]

Due to having endured being sexually abused by her own father at the age of five, Kay Challis developed Dissociative Identity Disorder, and created alters to protect her and help her cope with the psychological trauma of the abuse she suffered. However because of continued exposure to stressful environments and multiple other abuses sustained from various other incidents, Kay's condition continued to create more alters to defend her from various "threats".

This eventually resulted in the disorder creating its own vast underground railway to accommodate each of these newly created alters. Each alter is given their own "Station" to live in within the Underground when not fronting Kay's body. Due to continued accumulated trauma from continued abuse at Mental Asylums and other incidents, "the Underground", as Jane herself states, is "vast".

Later, Kay would reveal to Jane that there was a prior construct where her alters resided before the Underground's creation when she showed her the old method of how her alters would manifest.

When only Jane and Kay were left after "Subconscious Patrol", something dark and evil began manifesting and tried to attack Kay while Jane was manifested; resulting in a sonic scream that blocked the Underground. This forced Jane to make Doctor Harrison the new primary to get the other alters back.

Interior & Layout[]

The Underground, true to its name, primarily appears as a vast underground train railway, with it having "Train Tracks" that seemingly leads to the various areas, residences, memories and stations of each individual alter.

Stations[]

As stated by Jane, each of the alters residing in the Underground possess their own living areas called "stations" that act as their main residence when not "surfaced" in Kay's physical body. Some stations even serve a specific purpose that assist in helping protect Kay.

Hammerhead's Jail[]

Hammerhead's station, seems to take the form of a typical prison/jail facility complete with caged cells that serve as detainment cages for the alters when they become troublesome to the other alters, and/or endanger Kay. This is first seen when Hammerhead imprisoned Karen after her attempt at marriage to Douglas Calhoun began to endanger them until she "cooled off" long enough to be returned to her own station. She also later imprisoned Cliff Steele upon him entering the Underground without permission and was seen detaining Jack Straw there too for an unknown reason.

Later she also imprisoned Jane after she begun acting impulsively and using drugs to weaken them.

The Sisters' Parlor[]

The Sister's station seemingly takes the form of a psychic parlor complete with a number shoe that gives out number tickets whenever the the sister's allows one of their alters to have a face-to-face "consolations" with their fellow alters when they begin "looking for answers".

Miranda's Station[]

Although its original layout is unknown, after Miranda threw herself into the well and destroyed herself, her station was seemingly left in complete ruins and now takes the form of a debilitated warehouse filled with human corpses that have been brutally disfigured and left to rot and while others where mostly left hanging by various rope noses and impaled on butcher shop meat chains.

Black Annis's Hallway[]

Black Annis's station seemingly takes the form of a long dark brick hallway covered with scratch marks due to Black Annis scratching her metal claws on them.

The passageway itself serves as the primary passageway to the Well.

The Well[]

The Well is seemingly the station of Daddy, the mental/psychological impression of Kay on her father after his sexual abuse of her. As such, his station is seen to be located in the deepest parts of the Underground and the journey going there requires the alter seeking it to go through Kay and the other alters' darkest memories.

It was later revealed that the Well itself is the very same Well from the Kay's childhood home, her father using it to trap her whenever she did something to displease him.

Kay Challis's Room[]

Although unconfirmed, the Original Kay Challis was shown to reside in the deepest darkest memory/station within the Underground. As seen where Jane briefly visited her, where she entered into Kay's childhood home, having been seen walking down the hallway and seeing the photos of Kay's life prior to developing DID before reaching Kay's bedroom and seeing Kay, who is seen constantly putting together her jigsaw puzzle.

Later during Season 2, it was indeed confirmed that this was indeed the original Kay Challis and this was the place she primarily resides in within the Underground.

Baby Doll's Playpen[]

Although never shown, Baby Doll was stated to possess her own PlayPen that was presumably her personal station within the Underground. It was first mentioned after Crazy Jane attempted to evacuate Baby Doll there after the Candlemaker had entered into the Underground to kill her. Eventually, after Baby Doll's body was thrown into the Well, her station collapsed as the alters had no need for it anymore.

Flaming Katy's Station[]

Although unspecified and its physical layout was never shown, Flaming Katy was shown and stated to possess her own Station deep within the Underground. However after her death at Candlemaker's hands and Katy's body being thrown into the Well, Katy's station was stated to have collapsed as they have no need for it anymore.

Scarlet Harlot's Station[]

Although its exact appearance is unrevealed, its been shown that for some reason Scarlet Harlot's Station has now become barricaded and inaccessible to the other alters by the time of Dumb Patrol. It was later revealed that Scarlet Harlot was thrown into the Well by "Miranda" that resulted in her Station being closed.

The Balladeer's Station[]

Although not shown and described, the Balladeer was stated to have her own Station located deep within the Underground. It was stated by Hammerhead that her station was located so deep, that none of the other alters have ever interacted, met and seen her before she presented herself during the funeral procession.

Crazy Jane's Station[]

Similar to the other alters, Jane also possess her own station within the Underground despite her usually being the one in control of their body as Primary. Although its appearance is still not shown, after she was thrown into the Well by Miranda, her station is now also barricaded and inaccessible with a closed sign on its entrance.

The Depot[]

As seen during Karen being returned to the Underground, the Underground possesses its own main train station refered as "The Depot". That serves as the primary meeting point and access point between the alters from the Underground to the "Surface" (Jane's Body). With Flit,The Secretary,The Nun, Mama Pentecost, Pretty Polly, Lucy Fugue, Driller Bill, Crazy Jane, Jill-In-Irons, Kit W'the Candlestick, Scarlet Harlot, Hammerhead and Baby Doll being its primary visitors in order to immediately "surface" when they are needed.

  • Driver 8's Train: Driver 8's personal station is shown to primary take the form of a mobile train that travels all around the Underground in order to bring the personalities to their individual stations to the "surface" (Jane's Body) immediately when they are needed.

Memories[]

As seen and stated by Penny Farthing, the Underground is also littered with the combined memories of all of the alters of everything that happened to them during their time "surfaced". Allowing the alters that weren't present or created at the time to observe and see the memories of the other alters without having to ask the alter in question personally.

Miranda's Memories[]

After she killed herself in The Well, all of Miranda's memories where stated to now be scattered all across the Underground for all the persona's to see. As seen where the memories of Miranda's time in middle school and her forced exorcism during her emergence as primary was seen by Jane, Cliff, Penny Farthing and the Secretary.
