"A hundred and thirty-nine years."
"Dear god! Hes practically dead!" - —Rita Farr and Niles Caulder
"Tyme Patrol" is the second episode of the second season of Doom Patrol. It premiered on DC Universe and HBO Max on June 25, 2020.
Synopsis[]
Cliff, Jane, and Rita pursue a time-altering doctor in their reluctant quest to help Niles and Dorothy. Meanwhile, Vic meets a military vet who challenges his beliefs.[1]
Plot[]
London carnival: 1927[]
Niles finds himself in the audience to confirm that the “Monkey-faced girl” attraction was his daughter. What he also bares witness to in the process is how The Candlemaker killed everyone else at the carnival that night.
A couple of years later, Niles sends Dorothy to hide in Danny, who was “a smart alley” at the time, and set out on his journey to gain immortality. All so that he would always be around to protect his daughter from others and from herself. His investigation eventually led him to Paraguay, where he stole a talisman in the form of a rabbit’s leg that provided him with immortality. Unfortunately, this was not a permanent solution, so he began to test out his unethical experiments of immortality on what is now the team.
Present Day[]
Once they are back to their normal size, the team learns from Niles that the talisman he gave to Willoughby Kipling in order to rescue them was the only thing keeping him from aging and that he’s currently 139 years old.
Unfortunately, Vic’s PTSD is making staying in Doom Manor dangerous, and Larry can't help once he finds out from his Negative Spirit that his son, Gary, has killed himself. Which leaves Rita, Jane, and Cliff to help the Niles. He explains to the trio that he knows of a man named Dr. Tyme who possesses a stone that gives him total control over time. Jane agrees to the mission at hand because she wants to protect Dorothy. Rita for her part still feels a mistaken sense of obligation to Niles and agrees to go. Cliff for his part admits he is only going because he knows Niles wouldn't actually want him to go.
Soon, the three are gathered in a circle to transport into Dr Tyme’s domain in order to retrieve a substance called "Continuinium". Believing that the continuium was located in Dr. Tyme's "helmet", The team was instructed to remove his helmet and obtain the mineral. Once there, the team finds themselves in a neverending disco dance party. Dr. Tyme spots them right away and explains that that day in 1980 when Donna Summers’ “Bad Girls” was at the top of the charts, was the peak of humanity in all of the past and all of the future. And so he’s chosen to live eternally in that moment. All while samurai, some tribal warriors, explorers, and disco dancers are all part of his parade. When Cliff freaks out, Rita manages to harness her powers long enough to smash Dr. Tyme’s head open on the floor. Jane and Cliff go for the gem, which is fused to Tyme’s brain, and end up locked in memories of their creation. It’s only when Rita literally turns back time that they manage to escape their memories before Dr. Tyme kicks them out.
Meanwhile, Vic is in Detroit, trying to attend PTSD support groups. At one of them, he sits in and listens to others share their stories. Eventually, he gets to know one of the members after the meeting. When they leave, someone attempts to mug his newest friend, but as a war veteran, she handles the altercation quite easily. They have a quick conversation about whether the cops should be involved, and Vic eventually sees things her way and lets the would-be thief go. Elsewhere, Larry heads to his son’s funeral where he decides to speak to his living son, who eventually invites him back to his late son’s home, where Larry sees the reminders of a life consumed by conspiracy theory. His son believed him to be alive and followed numerous rumors and plotlines in an effort to prove it until ultimately his own anguish caused him to commit suicide. While Larry was moping around for fifty years, his children lived and were inadvertently hurt by his selfish actions.
At the same time, Jane's adventure into the Tyme Capsule forced her to remember her life, many years ago, when she lived with her mother in a religious cult. She remembers how her personalities tried to protect her from her abusive father who was never properly punished, and her own trauma was ignored and minimized. More importantly, she remembers what happened Miranda, the previous primary personality, and toys with the idea that perhaps a change is needed. Just as Larry is heading back from the funeral he sees a whole group of butterflies.

Trivia[]
- How to get to Dr. Tyme's dimension won't work on anyone born beyond the date Dr. Tyme loves; though this is speculation, since the Doom Patrol is made up of people who've been around since the mid-1900s.
- Dr. Tyme likely surgically altered his head when he found the Continuinium; since Rita only guessed what he looked like.
- While not spoken, Dr. Tyme likely imprisoned everyone in his disco dimension when they can looking for his Continuinium; given they all became violent after his spell/song was broken.
