"Wax Patrol" is the ninth and final episode of the second season of Doom Patrol. It premiered on DC Universe and HBO Max on August 6, 2020.
The episode was originally intended to be the penultimate episode of the season, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was shut down before the planned finale could finish being filmed.
Synopsis[]
Before the Doom Patrol can answer a call to save the world from The Candlemaker in the season finale, they must first battle long-forgotten imaginary friends.
Plot[]
Kay's beloved toy is still floating down into The Well with an unconscious Jane floating after it.
Milwaukee: 1969[]
Miranda leaves work at a sandwich shop to take her lunch break and a street musician sits down to chat with her. He has been playing outside the shop for a bit and Miranda is new to the area. He asks her out and she says yes, before giving her a necklace he bought with the nickels she usually gives him for his performances.
Present Day:[]
At Doom Manor, Cliff is trying to figure out what to wear to his daughter's wedding and Miranda decides to help him. Upstairs, Vic is playing sad love songs as a result of his breakup with Roni. Rita tries to console him, but she is also struggling with her inability to stop Roni when the situation called for it. Just as the team comes together to see Cliff off, Herschel shows up and tells them that Dorothy can't hold back the Candlemaker anymore and that Armageddon is coming if she can't. Cliff decides to bail, but the rest of the team convince him to stay.
At the fair, the Candlemaker has been wreaking havoc and the team locates Willoughby while Dorothy tries to hide from Candlemaker in the arcade. Willoughby explains that Candlemaker has summoned all of their imaginary friends in order to stop them before being dragged off. The team splits up to find Niles and Miranda suddenly passes out.
As it turns out, she passed out because The Underground has summoned her back because she went to help Dorothy and the rest of the personalities confront her about this decision.
Back at the fair, Rita runs into her imaginary friend, a paper doll named Mademoiselle Roxy. Vic also runs into his own imaginary friend as well, whom he named Dr. Cowboy, and looks just like his dad. Vic thinks he defeated him, but he pops right back up. Meanwhile, Cliff encounters his imaginary friend modeled Jesus, who attacks him, and they fight. However, in the process of the fight, he also works out some of his own issues and the two hug it out. Larry finds Willoughby covered in wax and ends up covered in wax himself. Taking a page out of Cliff's tactic, Vic opens up to Dr. Cowboy and mentions his current feelings about Roni. Whereas Rita opens up about her own issues to her paper doll. Unfortunately, one at a time they all get waxed, except Cliff, who gets busted apart first.
In Miranda's past, she has now moved into an apartment with the boy from the diner. They've been dating for a few years and at first glance, it appears as if things are generally going well. Miranda promises the other personalities though that the relationship is a good thing for all for them. During a housewarming party a few days later, Miranda notices people starting to kiss each other and one of her boyfriend's friends tries to kiss her. As it turns out, his boyfriend is hosting an orgy. When she balks, he pressures her into going along with it. Unfortunately, Miranda can only see Kay's abusive father and starts rapidly cycling through personas before fully freaking out. She passes out and is pulled back to The Underground where she's rejected by Kay herself. This in turn leads her to throw herself into The Well. Up top, Jane wakes up and is primary for the first time.
In The Well, Jane, who has awakened, swims towards a glowing light at the bottom while Kay goes to Jane's station and finds it closed. In The Well, Jane discovers Miranda's necklace and much to her horror, Miranda's corpse as well. Kay is then approached by the same personality pretending to be Miranda this whole time. It's subsequently revealed that who everyone thought was Miranda, was in reality a manifestation of their monstrous father all along.
At the fair, Niles calls out to Dorothy and she comes to him and sees everyone covered in wax. Before Dorothy can get to Niles, though, her mother Slava appears and stops her. She tells Dorothy that no one can protect her and only she can deal with the Candlemaker. She gives her the choice to be a little girl or be a woman and face the Candlemaker herself. Dorothy chooses to grow up and face the Candlemaker. She conjures her own weapon and the Candlemaker takes her to meet her fate.

Trivia[]
- Imaginary friends Candlemaker brought to life:
- Punch and Judy puppet (Willoughby Kipling)
- Madame Roxy (Rita)
- Dr. Cowboy (Vic)
- Jesus (Cliff)
- Larry is the only member of the Doom Patrol to not have an imaginary friend; a clear nod to him being the most mentally sound. An imaginary friend is a schizophrenic hallucination created by lonely children.
- Crazy Jane is one of the many alternate personalities, already serving the purpose.
- If the spirit of Slava hadn't unfrozen Dorothy's biology to force her to technically enter womanhood as part of the ritual to face Candlemaker, Niles would have succeeded in going through with having Kipling kill Dorothy.
